Materials related to slavery, abolition, and the free produce movement in Haverford College Special Collections.

Newspapers

Special Collections holds issues of over 250 newspapers from the 18th through 20th century, with a focus on New England and the Mid-Atlantic states. We have multiple issues of some papers, and only one of others. Anti-slavery advocay is one of the strngths of the newspaper collections, which includes a number of issues of William Llyod Garrison's The Liberator and the The National Anti-Slavery Standard

Images were a powerful force within the abolition movement, and were often used as evidence in arguments about the inhumane treatment of slaves. Images mentioned here are seperate images; many of the novels included in the "books" tab are illustrated, and may also contain images.
