WRPR 104: American Dreams (HC) Spring 2014: Introduction

Writing Program 104: American Dreams: Ethnographic Perspectives on the United States (Hall) Spring 2014

Introduction

The resources on these pages will provide you with background information and scholarly studies for your ethnographic project on American diversity.

When you read an article or a chapte from a book, ask yourself these questions to evaluate it more fully and place it in a more meaningful context:

    * Viewpoint - What are the author's assumptions and beliefs?  Does the author want to persuade me that some situation needs attention and action?

    * Expertise - What is the author's training?  Has he or she published other titles in this subject area?

    * Audience - Who are the intended readers?  Is it for the general public, for students, or for researchers?

    * Discipline Focus - Does the author define the issues broadly or is s/he focusing on a particular aspect from one field of study?  For example, writing only about education or about government legislation rather than combining fields of study.

    * Documentation - Is there a bibliography for further reading?  Are there titles there that I have not seen  before?

    * Date - If this was published more than 10 years ago, do I need to find updated information?
